Playing Not to Lose

I was reading an article this week that reminded me of a lot of churches. Tennessee Vols football coach (at least for the moment) Phil Fulmer said that he was pleased with his new quarterback’s performance because he had yet to lose a game for them. He also recognized that you have to step your performance up to another level in order to start winning the big games.
How many churches are just “playing it safe” in order not to lose any ground? Momentum is critical in any church plant. You don’t want to do anything stupid that’s going to hamper your growth. You begin to be overly cautious about changes; you play not to lose. The problem is what you are doing today may not support the growth you need tomorrow. We are looking at some changes at Journey that will allow us to continue to grow and see more people come into a life changing relationship with Jesus. The problem is that change tends to freak people out. If you haveĀ been reading Mark or Charlie’s Blogs you may be feeling a bit uneasy about changes that are coming. Well rest assured we aren’t changing our focus! We are just making some small tweaks that we think will make things better. We aren’t changing any players or coaches but we may make some adjustments to our playbook because we are all about winning.
Don’t miss this Sunday as we finish up our Supernatural series. We will be talking about the realities of Heaven and Hell. Also keep your eye out for some small tweaks in what we do. You might even see me wear a tie!
